As Coca-Cola and Disney prepared to promote TRON Legacy, a movie launching nearly 30 years after its predecessor, the question became how could the marketing be as innovative as the remake of the movie itself?
The original TRON spawned an iconic arcade game. So to promote TRON Legacy, we revamped the game to become a location aware, multiplayer mobile app, named TRON LIVECYCLE. Players were able to play live against opponents anywhere in the world, mapping their location to our virtual TRON grid.
Every virtual game grid was controlled by each player’s real world location, using the iPhone’s accelerometer and gyroscope. At launch, TRON LIVECYCLE was the first location aware, multiplayer video game in the world.
The movie was a hit and so was the app. The app was downloaded and played in over 136 countries around the world, with TRON superfans playing up to 500 times per week.
